Young Clairwood soccer star amped to compete in international cup

The Grade 4 learner has a few days left to raise about R5 000.

FOR soccer fanatic, Ishaq Mohamed, being able to compete at an international cup is a dream come true.

Ishaq, 9, of Clairwood, was selected through his soccer team, Durban Lyons Football Club (FC), to play in the Youth Easter Soccer (YES) Cup, an international youth football tournament set to take place in Milan, Italy, from April 6 to 9.

However, the Grade 4 learner at South Coast Madressa School, has a few days left to raise about R5 000.
Zakia Mohamed, his mother, said the trip cost between R21 000 and R27 000.

“We are grateful for all those who contributed to making this trip a reality for my son. A child’s dream is so important, because without dreams there is no future for them. We have a few days left to raise the last bit of funds and I am confident that we will be able to with the help of the community,” she said.

Mohamed said Ishaq’s passion for soccer started at a young age.

“From the time he could walk, he has been fascinated with the ball. His older brother used to play with him and teach him tricks with the ball. He also played with the older boys and adults, which helped him play beyond his age group.

“At just four-years-old he joined the Bayview Soccer Club and played with them until last year. It was during a tournament that he was scouted to play for the Durban Lyons FC under 11 team and has been with this amazing club ever since,” she said.

Ishaq said he loved soccer because of the positive impact it has. “It has many physical benefits, as well as brings me a lot of happiness and excitement. I also love that it involves teamwork and you are always learning,” he said.

Ishaq said he was inspired by Mohamed ‘Mo’ Salah, who plays for his favourite team, Liverpool FC.

“I admire him because of his confidence, hard work, and his skills. I hope to be as great as him one day and also play professionally, hopefully for Liverpool as well.

“But for now, I cannot wait to compete in my first international cup. I am nervous, but more excited as it is a new experience. I am ready for it, Italy here I come,” he said.
