Yellowwood Park mother-daughter duo to get ‘locked-up’ for charity

The duo says they're doing this because animals cannot raise these much-needed funds on their own.

A YELLOWWOOD Park mother-daughter duo will brave spending 24 hours ‘locked up’ in a dog kennel again this year in a bid to raise much-needed funds for the Kloof and Highway SPCA. Rebe 40, and Rebecca, 7, will be participating in the SPCA’s annual Dog Box Challenge with the hope of raising R10 000 or more, which will ‘bail’ them out.

The fundraiser will take place from noon on Friday, May 26 to Saturday, May 27. However, donations can be made from now to support them. Koszulinski said she initially started participating in the challenge together with some friends in 2021.

“This fundraiser really helps the SPCA teams and inspectorate, who work tirelessly to rescue animals from abuse and neglect, and bring those responsible to justice,” she said.

Koszulinski said Rebecca, a Grade two learner at Kainon School, participated in the challenge for the first time last year. “When I told my daughter about it and she had visited me the first year I participated, she voiced her intent to help me and help the animals the following year and she did. She also loved the idea of being able to show her friends and people in general that we are trying to help the animals, by sleeping over in a kennel as a human during the middle of winter.

“The cold really makes you aware of just how much these animals need our support and how much they need a warm bed inside a loving home with a family that cares for them,” she said. Koszulinski said she believed it was important for the public to get involved in such initiatives.

“This is because the animals simply cannot raise these much-needed funds on their own. Sadly, most people think that they don’t need to donate as they are sure someone else will. However, we want to change that view and for people to actually think that every single person that helps can make a difference. Koszulinski said they had raised just over R6 800 last year. “Unfortunately, we did not make the minimum amount. Rebecca was very sad as she wanted to meet our goal or even go past it. This year she is determined and has been collecting every coin from our wallets over the last couple of months to donate,” she said.

Koszulinski added her involvement in animal rescue, foster and rehab over the years, has sparked her daughter’s interest to follow in the same footpath.

“Being raised in that environment has grown her passion for helping and loving all animals, so much so that she will even wake up with me to help bottle feed an orphaned lamb in the early hours of the morning.
“We also currently foster puppies for an amazing animal rescue non-profit organisation, SAFE and Rebecca absolutely loves helping the puppies. We hope to start our own sanctuary farm in the near future to continue helping animals,” she said.

Koszulinski said she was appealing to the public to donate from now on.

“This will help us reach our R10 000 goal. The public can also support us and the SPCA by attending on the day. There will be a market and loads of other activities. No donation made is too small as it all adds up in the end and literally every cent does count for these amazing animals. Donors will receive a Section 18A certificate,” she said.
