Wentworth lad sets sight on playing in international soccer tournament

Kionte's dream is to hopefully to represent the country in a world cup and play for Manchester United.

DESPITE only playing soccer for the past year, Kionte’ Anderson already has his mind set on showcasing his skills on international grounds. Kionte’, 9, of Austerville, was selected through his soccer team, Durban Lyons Football Club (FC), to play in the Youth Easter Soccer (YES) Cup, an international youth football tournament, set to take place in Milan, Italy, from April 6 to 9.

However, the left-footed winger/ midfielder only has a few weeks left to raise about R27 000 for his flights and accommodation. Trevlin Anderson, his father, said he is now appealing to the public and businesses for assistance.

“I need help so that my son can achieve his dream. Unfortunately, I am not in a financial position to pay for the trip, so I have to try and get donations or a sponsorship. Further to this, our community is known for the worst of things such as violence, alcohol and drug abuse. We want to show that good things also come out of Wentworth, as well as show our youth that there is a better life to live,” he said.

Anderson said, the Grade 5 learner at Durban East Primary school, started playing soccer at the age of eight.
“He has only been playing soccer for the past year, but has grown tremendously in this short space of time. However, he has been pushing himself to grow in the sport and you will never find him without a football at his feet. He trains every single day and even when he is asleep, he is dreaming about soccer. You will often him shout out in his sleep,’ pass the ball’, ‘shoot’ or ‘I am open’.

“Kionte’ also plays for his school team and he is very disciplined as well dedicated. He also excels at his studies,” he said. Anderson said his son’s dream is to hopefully to represent the country in a world cup and play for Manchester United.

“It is his dream team which he supports so dearly. He never misses a game unless it is a school night. However, he knows that not everyone can become a professional soccer player so that’s why he also pushes to succeed at his academics. If he doesn’t become a professional soccer player he wants to become a pilot.

“As any parent would want want only the best for their child, I wish to make his dream of playing in the international tournament a reality. We would greatly appreciate any help we receive,” he said.

If you would like to sponsor or donate towards the trip, contact Anderson on 083 608 8292.
