Fishing enthusiasts awarded for biggest catch of the day

The competition was open to men, women and children, with the top three in each category winning an array of prizes.

ARMED with their best rods and bait, over 240 fishing enthusiasts, both competitive and social, tried their best to catch the largest edible fish at the annual Cuttings Fishing Forum competition held at the Merebank Cuttings Beach recently.

Rishi Ganas, the chairperson of the forum which was established in 2019, said the competition was open to men, women and children, with the top three in each category winning an array of prizes.

“The day, which not only focused on fishing but fun for the entire family, was definitely one to remember. While the day started of gloomy and dull, it quickly turned out to be a buzz of excitement. We had anglers as young as 6 years old competing as well father and son, and grandparent teams,” he said.

The winner in the women’s catergory, Keshrina Munsaur.

Ganas said the prizes which were worth a total over R5000, consisted of the forum’s branded apparel, Posiedon rods, fishing reels, tackle, fishing gear and books.
“The forum had then concluded with a presentation of the prizes, trophies and floating trophies. We would like to thank all participants, sponsors and the community at large for coming out and supporting their fellow anglers,” he said.

Top three in children’s category, Abdul Qaadir Karoojee(first), Angelo Mariah(second), and Neeleshen Govinden(third).

Ganas said there was more to the sport than just catching a fish.

“It is about having fun with friends and family, as well enjoying the outdoors and learning new skills. Fishing also provides a great opportunity to learn about different species of fish.

“The forum would like encourage members of the Merebank, Wentworth, Bluff, Isipingo, Chatsworth and Phoenix communities to join us. Our aim is to uplift the community and make a positive impact in the lives of our youth, ” he said.
