Man sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for Merebank grandmother’s killing

Raj Lutchman, her nephew, who made the discovery, said the family and friends of Fakira were happy with the sentence handed down.

THE family of a Merebank grandmother, Dhanwathie Fakira, believe justice has been served, after the man found guilty of killing her was sentenced to 15 years behind bars.

Fakira, 79, of Arcot Place was found laying on her back in a pool of blood on her bedroom floor by her visiting relatives on November 25, 2018. She was still alive at the time of her discovery, but passed away shortly after paramedics arrived. She had sustained multiple stab wounds to her neck, face and hands.

However, he was found guilty and sentenced in the Durban Regional Court last week. He will serve his sentence at Westville Prison.

Raj Lutchman, her nephew, who made the discovery, said the family and friends of Fakira were happy with the sentence handed down.

“It was a long haul to the final day of judgment, but it was worth the wait. We are happy that after four years, there was finally justice served after the heinous crime committed to a defenseless pensioner. However, the death of my aunt is a great loss to our entire family as she was an elder and a mother figure to all the generations that followed. The family would like to thank all the family members and friends for their support, as well the justice system and the detectives for finally putting this case to rest,” he said.
