Construction company helps matrics with exam venue

ON Thursday, 24 October, the matric pupils of Wentworth Secondary School were given some much-needed support from Group Five Construction in the form of resources to write their final exams.

The school, which is under-resourced and faces sometimes insurmountable financial challenges, appealed to the construction company, based in Bayhead, for funds. The matric class of about 250 pupils had nowhere to write their final exams because they coincided with the school’s internal examination programme.

With exams set to commence on Monday, 28 October, the school was grateful to the company for the donation of a marquee and seating facilities. “With significant time restraints surrounding the need for proper seating, lighting and ventilation for the pupils, Group Five quickly explored a number of options to assist. The best immediate solution was to hire massive tenting with ventilation and lighting that will enable the matriculants to be seated comfortably and in accordance with the Department of Education’s specifications,” said Group Five human resources director, Cindyanne May.

At the presentation of the marquee, which seats 250, has air-conditioning and lights with a generator and portable toilets, the teachers were emotional and expressed their immense gratitude. Group Five also gave each pupil a cooler bag, stationery and refreshments.

Fay Lamalette, Wentworth Secondary School principal, said: “We are overjoyed with Group Five and what they have done for the school. Our pupils are benefiting greatly from this project and we hope to continue the relationship in the future. Group Five agreed to help us within a day of the request, which is brilliant and they have contributed to the education of pupils in Wentworth.”

Education circuit manager, Bhekuyise Ngwane lauded the efforts of the principal, her staff and the pupils’ parents in ensuring this participation and thanked Group Five for their profound.

“Group Five is proud to make such a meaningful difference in the lives of these pupils and we wish them the best of luck with their exams. We hope to one day see many of them working in our industry,” said May.
