Montclair mom loses cervical cancer battle

The single mom's health took a turn for the worst, and she was admitted to hospital.

AFTER an eight-month-long cervical cancer battle, Charmaine Bateman passed away in hospital a short while ago.

The Sun recently spoke to the 31-year-old of Montclair, who lost her mobility and was bedridden. We had appealed to the community to assist her with basic necessities as she was no longer able to work.

The single mother of two girls, aged two and seven, was diagnosed with stage three cervical cancer in March this year.

Bateman, who worked as a Grade R teacher at a school in Umlazi, said her life completely changed when the left side of her body went completely numb in September.

She said the tumour had grown and was pressing on a nerve which ran through her left leg, causing her to lose her mobility.

At the time, Bateman had told the SUN she was waiting until her next check-up in December to find out if the tumour had shrunk. Her only wish was to be able to walk again and to play with her little girls.

Marie Bateman, her mother, said she had been admitted to hospital last week as her health had deteriorated and she needed a blood transfusion.

“My child’s journey has come to an end, but she fought as hard as she could. God had other plans for her. I would just like to thank everyone that has assisted and supported us over the past couple of months.”
