Catch flying ants to donate to wildlife centre

If you can't immediately take the flying ants to the centre, residents can freeze them and contact CROW.

IT is not uncommon to feel annoyed when you have to close your doors and windows during hot spring and summer afternoons, when flying ants make their way out from underground.

Why not go outdoors and catch flying ants, which are a high protein natural food source for wild birds and mammals, to donate to the Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife (Crow).

Crow’s operations director and herpetologist, Clint Halkett-Siddall, said Crow appeals to residents to catch ants to donate.
“We appeal to the public to help us catch flying ants when they come out. Residents are welcome to drop them off at our centre, situated at 15A Coedmore Avenue, Yellowwood Park. If you can’t immediately bring the flying ants to the centre, residents can freeze them and contact us,” said Halkett-Siddall.

Ways to catch flying ants:
• You can catch them with your hands and place them in a bottle.
• Switch of the lights, take a torch and balance it over a bucket.
• Put a bucket under a spot of light on the wall.
• Fill a pipe with cardboard, insert it into a flying ant mound. Leave it for a couple of days and the flying ants should come into the tube.
