Car theft on the rise in Merebank, warn police

Communications officer of the Wentworth police station, Captain Mbuso Gumede, said theft is occurring during midday and culprits are targeting light motor vehicles.

FOLLOWING a recent increase in the theft of motor vehicles in the Merebank central and Cuttings Beach areas, members of the Wentworth police recently held an initiative to inform residents about safety.

Wentworth police station spokesperson, Captain Mbuso Gumede, said the theft occurred during midday and culprits are targeting light motor vehicles.

He said in the Cuttings Beach area, community members who have parked their vehicles and are fishing have been targeted.

“Police appeal to all fishermen to ensure that vehicles are securely locked and all valuables like cellphones, cameras, bags, and other expensive items are not left on car seats to attract the culprits. This tempts them to break into a car to steal these items.

“If possible, fisherfolk should get a family member to leave them at the beach and pick them up after fishing,” Gumede said.

Wentworth police also advise residents to always activate their vehicle alarm system and double-check that the vehicle doors are locked before leaving their vehicle to avoid remote jamming.

“The increase in the theft of motor vehicles has prompted police to beef up police visibility in Merewent, Merebank Central, Cuttings Beach, and the Navy area.

“The social crime prevention police officers have had success during the awareness campaign, where motorists and shoppers were warned and educated on various prevention measures and safeguarding of vehicles in order to deal with the increase in the theft of motor vehicles,” added Gumede.

They distributed pamphlets containing educational brochures and information to assist them with safeguarding themselves against being a victim.

Acting station commander of the Wentworth police station, Lieutenant Colonel Clive Myburg, said he appeals to motorists to take precautionary measures and report crime.

He also encouraged motorists to be extra vigilant when driving and parking their vehicles.

To report crime, call CrimeStop on 08600 10111 or call the Wentworth police station on 031 451 6240/ 6241/6242.
