Martial arts students achieve success at national tournament

The students performed in various categories including hard forms, traditional weapons, and continuous sparring, among others.

STUDENTS of the Academy of Martial Arts put up their best performance at the Kempton Park Martial Arts’ 2022 All Styles Development Tournament held at the Kempton Park Indoor Sports Centre in Gauteng recently.

Sensei Seema Esterhuizen, the general secretary of the academy, said seven students, aged between 11 and 16, participated in various categories of the tournament.

The eight categories, included hard forms, traditional weapons, traditional contact sparring, creative forms, creative weapons, point sparring, low-kick sparring, and continuous sparring.

“The students made us extremely proud and walked away with 22 gold medals, 16 silver, and seven bronze among them. They did exceptionally well and showed that hard work and dedication do pay off.

“They are also motivated to continue training so they can achieve great success in future tournaments. I encourage all youth to join martial arts classes, as there are many benefits such as learning discipline, and self-defence,” she said.

Classes are held at the Austerville Community Hall. on Tuesday and Thursday, from 17:00 to 18:00.
