Bluff residents to join for service delivery protest

The march will highlight the ongoing sewage spills and non-functioning pumphouses in the Bluff.

WARD 66 councillor Zoë Solomon invites residents to join her plight in highlighting the deterioration of the Bluff area at a service delivery protest and march on Tuesday, August 23.

The march, which has already gained the support of many residents on social media, will highlight the ongoing sewage spills and non-functioning pumphouses in the Bluff.

“We have a National Wetland at the corner of Worthing and Torquay avenues which have been a pond of faeces for years. This should be a protected area. The Bluff National Golf Park always had an issue of sewage making its way into the canal network and this goes out to our beloved beaches, destroying the biodiversity of the valley, where we boast 136 bird species. In the Treasure Beach area, there is raw sewage that runs like a river through the yards of 12 homes and it then flows into to the sea. These are all as a result of faulty pumps and malfunctioning pump stations. Jetting and replacing of infrastructure does not resolve the issue for long and in most cases the sewage is a permanent and constant part of our everyday lives,” Solomon said.

To ensure that the issues receive the attention it deserves, Solomon said she plans to form a steering committee to handle specific areas and she will hand over a memorandum to an official of eThekwini Municipality.

“There are concerned, qualified and committed residents who are prepared to step up and help me fight this scourge. I look forward to a peaceful march and encourage those who are affected to join us. Placards will be provided, but residents are welcome to carry their own banners. No political party affiliation is necessary to join the march as the focus is on the issues faced by the community,” said Solomon.
