WATCH: Durban barista brews a cup of success

The Ntuzuma resident has been honing his craft and creating some of the most intricate patterns with his latte art.

LOCAL barista Vincent Majola was one of the standouts at this year’s Specialty Coffee Association of Southern Africa (SCASA) semi-finals competition for latte art.

The 27-year-old was one of six chosen for the national finals later this year, and his sights are set firmly on winning the competition and representing SA at the World Coffee Championships.

The Ntuzuma resident has been honing his craft and creating some of the most intricate patterns with his latte art.

Majola, who works at Now Coffee in Glenashley expressed his joy over being chosen as a finalist for this year’s SCASA competition in the latte art category.

“I was really ecstatic with the result. I see this is my opportunity to shine. Of course, my dream is to win and represent my country overseas. When I started out in latte art, I learnt from watching YouTube videos. I just love how intricate the art is – you have to have symmetry, innovation and blow people away with the patterns you produce.

“My first ever pattern I was able to reproduce was an inverted tulip. From there, I started experimenting and making a whole host of things. Using steamed milk to create patterns is really an art form. In the semi-finals I etched out a mother kangaroo and its joey, and the judges loved that,” he said.

The talented barista, who has his own brand of coffee, Nodoze, said his goal is to start a barista school in Ntuzuma.

“As a young Black entrepreneur, I want to introduce a coffee culture to the townships. The ultimate dream is to create a barista school to help train up-and-coming baristas and give them the skills to succeed. Coffee and coffee culture has opened up so many avenues for me, and I hope I can share this passion and love with others,” he said.
