Crow rewilds rare meerkat

Petal will be taken to a specialist rehabilitation centre for meerkats in a province where they naturally occur.

THE Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife (Crow) has undertaken the process of rewilding a meerkat called Petal. This is after the wild animal was brought to the centre by the Durban and Coast SPCA.

In a Facebook statement, Crow said the SPCA took Petal to them after someone had dropped her in claiming she is a stray.

“We were very shocked when she arrived at Crow as meerkats are not naturally found in KwaZulu-Natal. Upon examination of her health and condition, it was concluded that she was definitely a former pet or part of the illegal wildlife trade.

“This is due to the fact that she is incredibly tame and craves human attention. She has been placed in an enclosure that has the least human noise and traffic through to start her rewilding process,” the statement reads.

Petal will then be taken to a specialist rehabilitation centre for meerkats in a province where they naturally occur.

The Yellowwood Park-based Crow is an NGO that rescues, rehabilitates and releases injured, orphaned or displaced wild animals.
