Abantu Butho Congress founder takes eThekwini’s deputy mayor position

Philani Mavundla, who recently broke away from the NFP to form the Abantu Batho Congress, was elected as the new deputy mayor.

THE founder of the newly formed Abantu Butho Congress (ABC), Philani Mavundla, was elected as the deputy mayor for eThekwini this evening.

He is also a new member of the eThekwini Municipality’s executive committee.

Mavundla is renowned for backing former president Jacob Zuma during his corruption cases.

He was reported to have offered to pay for controversial upgrades to Zuma’s Nkandla home.

The former Greytown mayor was nominated to the committee by the African National Congress (ANC).

Mavundla will replace the ANC’s Ntokozo Sibiya on the committee. The ABC currently holds two seats on the eThekwini council.

The election results for deputy mayor Mavundla were 113 votes while Samuel Nkosi received 104 votes. Two council members did not vote.

The elections for the municipal chief whip are underway.
