eThekwini’s speaker promises mayoral election will not be suspended again

Thabani Nyawose called on council members to ensure that the City's leadership is elected today.

THE newly elected eThekwini Municipality Speaker, Thabani Nyawose has assured the council members that the incident that disrupted the first inaugural meeting held at Moses Mabhida will not happen again today.

Opening the meeting today at Durban International Convention Centre (ICC), Nyawose said there are measures in place to ensure that the meeting is not suspended again. On Monday, 22 November, Nyawose was forced to suspend the meeting after the stadium experienced a power failure.

He apologised to the members about the incident.

“I promise that the incident that led to the meeting being closed prematurely will not happen here. We chose ICC because it has enough security and generators in place. I assure you that today’s meeting will not be suspended,” he said.

Nyawose called on council members to ensure that the City’s leadership is elected today.

The meeting to elect the mayor, deputy mayor and chief whip is underway. Members of the council, by each political party, are as follows: ANC: 95, DA: 59, EFF: 24, IFP: 16 and Action SA: 4.
