Social unrest leads criminal records

THE Brighton Beach policing area is experiencing an increase in malicious damage to property (MITP) cases.

Brighton Beach SAP communications officer, Captain Louise Le Roux said they had received many reports, which were as a result of revenge; grudges; family fights; domestic violence; workplace disagreements; contract disparities or alcohol abuse.

“When a charge of MITP is registered against a person, it results in an immediate arrest. If convicted, a fine, imprisonment or both may be imposed. It is irrelevant what sentence is imposed, you will still have a criminal record. The court can also pass judgement that the item or items damaged should be replaced or the value of the damages be repaid. Damaging another person’s property because of money owed and as pay back for an injustice does not justify MITP.”
