ECD centres accredited for health promotion

WENTWORTH’S early childhood development (ECD) centres continue to make strides towards world-class education for the youth of the community.

The Wash programme, sponsored by Oxfam and executed by Save the Children aims to transform the health-related activities at ECD services in Wentworth.

A pilot accreditation programme will be rolled out at two ECD centres, Little David Educare and New Generations in Wentworth as health-promoting ECD facilities. This accreditation, which will be the first in KZN, will give recognition to the centres as facilities working towards improving the health of children.

“We see so many benefits in being accredited; it will attest to the quality of our ECD programme and will provide assurance to the community and parents that our centre and programmes have been evaluated and met the expected norms and standards set by the Department of Health,” said Pearl Windvogel from Little David Educare.

Glynnis Hamiel, principal of New Generations added: “This accreditation will promote the on-going self-evaluation and continuous improvement of our ECD centres and will hold us accountable. It will enhance our reputation and give us recognition nationally and most importantly, the vulnerable and disadvantaged children we serve benefit from these improved standards.”

Another step forward for Wentworth crèches is the road safety programme being piloted in the area by the KZN Department of Transport. ECD teachers assessed their current road safety teaching programme and were shown ways in which to improve them.

Many young children in Wentworth play on or cross roads alone and need to be taught proper safety. Practical activities and resources on road safety rounded up the programme.

“Wash is revolutionising why and how we do things in our ECD centres. We are excited, but also humbled at the small strides we are making and we are aware there is still so much more to do and improve upon,” said Wash programme officer for Wentworth, Gail Richards.
