Blanket donation gears children for a cosy winter

Established in April last year, the soup kitchen provides a nutritious meal to children on Wolraad Road on a weekly basis.

EVERY Thursday, an average of about 100 children receive nutritious meals on Wolraad Road.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of three women in Wentworth, these children’s parents have one less thing to worry about.

Realising the dire need for these meals Roslyn and Celeste King and Jennifer Noble took it upon themselves to start this initiative called Angels of the Valley.

“Our initiative is mainly for the children. We were sponsored by various companies with winter blankets for them. Our community is a poverty-stricken area and people have exploited that, using children to get funding and they never come back to the community to give back,” said Celeste, who added that there is a youth centre in the pipeline.

Established in April last year, they have been providing meals on a weekly basis.

Promac, Flexi Projects, Weltom and various other companies and individuals make the feeding scheme possible.

On Thursday, 13 May, over 300 children received a meal and blanket each.

“We want to give a big shout out to the companies that sponsor us. It took mothers from the community to stand up.”

“Our community has been neglected for many years and it saddens me to see that nobody cares. When we started the initiative a year ago, the three of us walked the streets looking for sponsors for the soup kitchen.”

“God has been on our side from that time and the soup kitchen has been running ever since. Thank you to the sponsors who go out of their way to hear our cries when we call them. May these companies flourish wherever they go,” said Roslyn.

Jennifer said all their efforts were possible because God is on their side.

“We started our initiative struggling because we are unemployed, but our hearts were with the children. We’re also grateful to the sponsors for making the donation possible.”

“At the end of the day, it is all about the children and the happiness and smiles we see on their faces. They always look forward to Thursday for the meals we provide them. They were even happier to receive their blankets,” she said.

The group would like assistance in securing storage space for their cooking utentsils, tables and gas cylinders. Call Roslyn King for more information 071-772-2655.
