Easter spoils for the elderly

THE Association for the Aged’s (Tafta) John Dunn House received Easter treats on Thursday, 1 April courtesy of Bluff-based contractors, Blaizepoint Engineering.

The company has a long-standing relationship with Tafta and adopted John Dunn House for their CSI projects, through which they gift and enhance the lives of the elderly living at the home. For this year’s contribution, Blaizepoint donated 85 Easter hampers containing cappuccino, hand sanitiser, hand creams and Easter eggs which were distributed at the Primrose Wellness Centre.

The wellness activities coordinator at the centre, Heidi Naidoo, said, “The reason for this gift to our elders is to let them know we still care about them. Even though we have not gathered in a long time, we have not forgotten about them. By giving our elders this hamper, we hope to show our love and wish them well for Easter.”

Tafta made it their mission to cast a spotlight on the funding gap created between the state pension of R1890 (as of 1 August 2021) received by elders and the cost of living for an older person. Tafta appealed to their donors, supporters and the general public to consider our elders and the tiny budget on which they have to meet their basic needs, and requested donations of toiletries and Easter treats.

“After the recent increase of R30 in the state pension, our elders still find it difficult to meet their basic needs. At Tafta; a portion of an elder’s pension goes toward their care, leaving very little budget for hygiene and personal items. Tafta steps in to provide these items through fundraising and acquisition of donations. This month we invited communities and corporates to assist us in providing basic toiletries and sweet treats to our elders in celebration of Easter and Human Rights month,” said Tafta CEO, Femada Shamam.

Shamam added, “The spirit of humanity has shone brightly during this month of human rights, with many corporate and community donors coming forward to support our Hop into a Heart campaign. We thank Blaizepoint Engineering for their contribution to the lives of our elders and their ongoing support to John Dunn House.”
