Wentworth BC’s Troy Garland narrowly edges out his opposition

A fine drizzle fell during most of the first round of play, but this lifted during the break to allow bowlers a clearer view of the heads they were playing into in the second session.

THURSDAY morning, 25 March, dawned wet, gloomy and the bowlers who had entered the Wentworth Bowling Club (WBC) breakfast trips were hesitant about whether to arrive for play or not.

Most of the competitors took a positive route and arrived to enjoy the breakfast and were happy to see the rain dissipate to allow play to start half an hour later than the advertised time.

A fine drizzle fell during most of the first round of play, but this lifted during the break to allow bowlers a clearer view of the heads they were playing into in the second session.

After a slow first game Godfrey Addinall, Rob Davies and Mike Hough stamped their authority on the second session game and ended the morning on top of the podium with a four plus 19. Three shots behind were the second placed team comprising Jorge Santos, Jacques Geldenhuys and Russell Fuller. The second session went to Brian Osman and his team, Eileen du Plessis and Paula Osman.

On Saturday, 27 March, three semi-final and one quarter final club singles games were contested. Denzil Lewis managed to reach the required 21 shots ahead of his opposition, Spider Williams, to qualify for the semi-final game against Gees Dennis on Thursday afternoon, 1 April.

The women’s open singles final, carded for Saturday afternoon, 3 April, is a repeat of the 2020 contest and will see Eileen du Plessis and Jay Retief take to the mat in their quest for champion status.

In a gripping game in which both bowlers demonstrated resolute determination, Troy Garland used his last bowl to sneak in the winning shot from Luvuyo Ndava, who was holding the two shots he needed to level the game on 20-all. Troy will play the winner of the Dennis vs Lewis semi-final in the men’s open single final on Saturday afternoon.

On Sunday, 28 March, the monthly Big Jim pairs competition proved to be a successful exercise for father and son combination, Kevin and Brad Claassens when they won both their games and accumulated a healthy shot difference to claim the winners’ spoils for the morning.

In second place were visitors from Queensburgh Bowling Club, Mark Burgess and Mark Vermeulen. Brian Smith and Matt Lassak did enough to walk away with the second session prize.

A festive atmosphere prevailed on Saturday, 20 March, when the guest of honour, president of Bluff Bowling Club, Ken Fann, presented the awards to the club’s achievers for 2020. The presentation of awards culminated with the announcement of the 2020 Victor Ludorum (Matt Lassack) and Victrix Ludorum (Jay Retief).
