Educational NPO receives much-needed learning centre

YESS was born as an after school programme with a holistic approach to educating, assisting and tutoring youth at the Blue Roof Life Space in Wentworth.

YOUTH Education Support Services (YESS) received a donation of a converted container from Sapref on Wednesday, 10 March, which will be used as the organisation’s reading and learning centre.

YESS was born as an after-school programme with a holistic approach to educating, assisting and tutoring youth at the Blue Roof Life Space in Wentworth.

“This is a momentous occasion for us because it’s the first step towards self-reliance as an NPO. We are very grateful for the relationship we have with Blue Roof who will house this facility. We are very grateful for the support and donation from Sapref,” said YESS project manager, Tania Hughes.

“We have been running our homework club at Blue Roof for a while now and they have been very accommodating, giving us space to be with our children and to supervise them while they work. But one thing we picked up was that there is a big need for our children to read more. There is not enough reading taking place in the home and so children are lagging behind with their literacy and to some degree with their numeracy, so we hope that this space, which is going to be a dedicated reading centre, will fill that need. We want our children to have the opportunity to hear the written word, to read books for themselves as well as play educational games in a safe space that will nurture a love of reading,” said YESS chairperson, Linda James.
