Dancing beyond disabilities

The Wentworth Arts and Culture Organisation and funded by the National Arts Council, Dance Movement started its dance lessons for people living with disabilities and who are wheelchair bound, on Tuesday, 16 February.

DANCE Movement kicked off the new year with a bang. The group commenced its youth dance lessons last week which are currently underway at Bluff Tyres.

Led and administered by the Wentworth Arts and Culture Organisation and funded by the National Arts Council, Dance Movement started its dance lessons for people living with disabilities and who are wheelchair bound, on Tuesday, 16 February at 29 Cobham Grove at the Whirling Wheels Club Disability Sports Hall from 5.30pm-7pm every Tuesday.

Dance Movement has run their special needs and disabled training and development lessons from 2016. The programme that was created to get people living with disabilities involved in the arts in order to access careers as well as to empower them through the arts. This includes training in arts and culture administration, management skills and performing arts for the stage.

“Arts disability is growing in this country and because dance and arts is universal, I created this inclusive programme for people living with disabilities to express themselves through the arts,” said Artistic Director Jarryd Watson.

Wheelchair dancer, Nelisiwe Sibiya has been dancing with Dance Movement since 2018 and has done well with her career which includes performances at the Playhouse theatre and the Durban Dance Movement festival. Currently she is performing in Dance Movement’s online show Dance Virtualosity where you see her perform. Dance Movement is appealing to all people living with disabilities of all ages and who are wheelchair bound to come and join the fun with learning hip hop and contemporary classes. The organisation is a registered NPO and PBO and appeals to any companies to sponsor its disability programme. Dance Movement is Covid-19 regulated and complies to the set protocols.
