New Bluff councillor is ready to serve the community

The Bluff's newly elected ward 66 councillor, Zoë Solomon, looks forward to represent the community in which she grew up, with the goal to turn the Bluff into an A-class ward.

“WHAT’S most important to the people, is important to me and I’ll treat it that way.” This is the mandate of the Bluff’s newly elected ward 66 councillor, Zoë Solomon.

The Bushlands Primary School old girl looks forward to represent the community in which she grew up, with the goal to turn the Bluff into an A-class ward.

“I care about your pothole complaint as much as care about a hungry child in Fynnland. I care the same. I don’t have prejudice or ranking in my thinking. The Bluff community can rest assured that I will treat their issues with equal importance. That’s my nature.

“With municipal backlog caused by the Covid-19 lockdown, what’s most important to the people is service delivery right now. I sympathise and I empathise – that’s my heart for my community. When I get a call from a community member who wants to know why they don’t have access to the public swimming pool, it affects me. I’ll treat people individually, I’m not going to throw a blanket over problems. I will be honourable, trustworthy, transparent and accountable. My management style will be public participation in every sphere. Communicating with the people about the projects and developments in their ward is important and I want to ensure that. Even if there are developments that are beyond my control, I’m going to listen to the community. That’s my heart, it’s not about ‘politricks’. I want people to feel confident that they can trust me because they can,” shared a committed Solomon.

She shared that leading up to the election, being a political party staff member of her own candidacy had its challenges. However, with strategic planning, a supportive team behind as well as the community’s backing, she was able to reap the fruits of her labour in a demanding campaign.

“I felt confident that the hard work would pay off, coupled with the fact that I’ve been such an active community person over the years,” said Solomon who also served as the chairperson of the ward 66 vulnerable groups committee for four years and led the Bluff Covid-19 Food Relief campaign.

She shared that election day as well as the special election (for the elderly and/or disabled) held the day before ran smoothly at the seven voting stations in the ward. Only one voting station, at Durban Academy, had to be counted twice due to a bit of discrepancy.

“It was such a great experience. I achieved my target and personal goal. Also the fact that 23 per cent of electorate actually came out is high for a by-election, because people generally don’t take it seriously. We ended up with 3799 votes,” said Zoe who won the election by 85,03 per cent according to the IEC.

She has a list of current and outstanding ward projects, challenges, and successes which she is determined to tackle in the new year after she has been officially sworn in as councilor. A new councillor’s office will be selected and details will be shared with the public in due course.
