Bolting on the Wanderers BC greens

Jeff Bolt is an avid bowler and the Wanderers BC's scribe.

IF bowls have taught local enthusiast, Jeff Bolt, anything, it is patience.

This is a philosophy he uses, both on and off the greens, and by so doing, understands that all players are from various walks of life and patience is key as each bowler is different.

He is also the Wanderers BC’s scribe, who jokingly describes his efforts as a great tool to get back at the bowlers who beat him during the week.

“It is a thankless task, but you get a warm feeling now and again when readers enjoy your article and mention they can’t wait for the next copy to get delivered.”

Fifteen years ago the member of the Montclair-based club was a hockey player. He only took up bowls because the club closed the hockey section due to lack of numbers. He decided to give it a go and now years later, he is a decorated bowler.”

“Winning a section in the men’s nationals in Johannesburg a few years ago was probably the most notable highlight of my bowling career. Last year I was also in the sides that won the men’s fours Spring tournament at Westville BC, as well as the mixed 7s tournament at Umkomaas BC,” he said.

“Bowls is a great leveller, because in one game you play well and hold your head high, and in the next game either the opponents are better or the greens are quicker or slower and you can’t wait to get off.”

“A common phrase is ‘won one, lost one’, as with most competitions you play two games in a session. It’s always a great day out. There are always times in the game and afterward where you hear conversations of how well the players were of yesteryear at the various competitions around the bowling greens.”

For inspiration and guidance with bowls, his go-to people are usually savvy bowlers such as Peter Prenger and Eric Swanson, who have years of experience under their belt.

Unlike a few years ago, bowling is gaining momentum with the younger generation and if you still think it is an old man’s sport, consider his response.

“Put your name down for a social game at your local club and give it a go. Most clubs host a fun day on the public holidays throughout the year and I’m sure they will receive you with open arms.”

“I recall a close friend having a go during one fun day and being a fitness fanatic, we all thought she would be a great player. Unfortunately, she did not warm up properly and pulled a hamstring. Needless to say, she never said it was a sport that lacked fitness again,” said Jeff.

Bowls at Wanderers BC are generally played on Sunday mornings, and some mornings throughout the week, but seldom on a Monday.

Entry fees range from R10 for a game and R50 for a breakfast before the game. Saturdays are usually reserved for club competitions and tabs in, where players practice their skills.

The club can be found at 42 Benson Road in Montclair or call 031-462-2320 for more information.
