Be part of the world’s biggest clean-up

THE Friends of the International Clean-up (ICC) invite locals to take part in the world’s biggest clean-up on Saturday, 14 September.

The ICC is a day for volunteers to work together to clear litter and debris from shorelines, waterways and oceans. The South Durban clean-up will begin at Brighton Beach and volunteers are asked to clean southwards of the beach, towards Tresure Beach, with a focus on the dunes.

People are asked to go along in groups of five, with strong gloves; hats; sunscreen; comfortable walking shoes; water bottles and a packed lunch, as no food will be provided. Adults may use pokers.

Volunteers are asked to obey team leaders and educators and to respect others; be aware of the waves; leave only footprints behind and tread carefully when clearing dune vegetation. All needles and glass must be handled carefully and gloves should be used at all times.

The team asks people not to enter the water or go on the rocks; smoke or consume alcohol; fight; leave the designated clean up area; or leave litter behind.

Data, which is valuable for ocean conservancy, will also be collected by the volunteers.

The clean-up takes place at Brighton Beach from 9am to noon on Saturday, 14 September. The event will move to Sunday, 15 September, if it rains on the day. RSVP by Friday, 30 August 2013 to Tatum van Soelen of the Wildlife Environmental Society of South Africa on 031-467-8507, fax 031-467-8288, or email tbeachedu@wessakzn.org.za.
