Bluff job seekers encouraged to submit CVs

Ward 66 war room chairperson, Charles Leaven encourages skilled and unemployed people to make use of the job seekers programme.

IN keeping with his mission to explore all the potential that the Bluff has to offer, ward 66 war room chairperson, Charles Leaven is calling for all unemployed community members to send through their CVs for an opportunity to be part of the development projects in the pipeline in the ward.

“Geographically we are a community that is surrounded by a belt of industry and the fact that we have such a high number of unemployment is not acceptable at all. We don’t necessarily want to force these industries to hire our people, but we are saying that government has legislation which states that if contractors are hired to work on local projects, a certain percentage of the labour force ought to be local. For example, Transnet is one of the biggest stakeholders with in the Island View complex, and we have plans to sit down and talk with them about putting this legislation into place. We are currently engaging with them on the TM1 project, which is the rebuilding of a petrol tank that had collapsed a while back. They have gone ahead with the contract and issued it to a contractor and we are trying to engage with them in working with the ward 66 office in ensuring that this opportunity works in favour of the community that they will be working in as well. Consideration and fairness needs to be taken taken into account when it comes to employment opportunities,” he said.

Leaven further encourages skilled and unemployed people to make use of the ward office’s job seekers programme which encourages people without work in the ward to submit their CVs which will be reviewed and added to a database where selections are made as job opportunities become available.

The programme is open to job seekers residing in Fynnlands, Ocean View, Grosvenor, Brighton Beach, Wentworth
and Treasure Beach.
According to Leaven, 158 people secured employment on local projects through the programme last year and he wants these numbers to increase by a considerable amount. “Let’s stand up for people’s jobs, let’s stand up for people’s livelihoods, we want to reach as many people as possible,” concluded an enthusiastic Leaven. For more information or to submit your CV email Charles Leaven on ward66.business@gmail.com or call 031-467-0056 or 065-810-1403.
