Wills seminar enlightens residents

SOUTH Africans were afforded the opportunity to draft their wills for free as a part of the National Wills Week from Monday 16 to Friday, 20 September. The initiative was made possible by the government in partnership with Legal Aid South Africa, the Law Society of South Africa and the Justice and Constitutional Development Department.

In furthering the discussion and making knowledge accessible, Montlands Library hosted a Wills Seminar at the Montclair Recreational Hall on Thursday, 26 September. Legal practitioners from ProBono.Org were guest speakers at the event and answered all wills and legal questions posed to them by residents.

“Having a will is very important. This means that the person gets to decide who gets their assets. If someone passes away without a will, the laws of the country will decide who their assets go to. In addition to our services, we assist the elderly with drafting free, simple wills throughout the year,” said regional director of ProBono.Org, Shamika Dwarika.

ProBono.Org is a non-profit organisation that assists the financially needy in Durban and surrounds with an array of matters, such as refugee law, labour, consumer or small claims, housing, deceased estates and family law. The organisation that gives free legal assistance also runs help desks and clinics in Durban and surrounds.
