Sewage problem needs addressing [LETTER]

This problem with blocked sewers in Bingham Place and Marine Drive, namely Crossways and the turn off to Anstey’s Beach, has been going on sporadically since the beginning of the year.

EDITOR – I called the offices of our councillor, JP Prinsloo, on Monday, 16 September, to be told that I have to complain to the municipality myself.

This problem with blocked sewers in Bingham Place and Marine Drive, namely Crossways and the turn off to Anstey’s Beach, has been going on sporadically since the beginning of the year. Last month the municipality seemed to have rectified the problem but no follow up was done to clean the street of human waste and toilet paper.

In light of my point above, that we, as ratepayers, need to fight these issues ourselves, what is the role or job description of a city councillor? Surely someone elected by the area and on a salary of around R500 000 a year should be doing more for the constituency he or she represents. It appears that we have representation without any power or ability to do anything for the area. May I suggest that we simply scrap councillor (all 400 or so of them) and allocate the savings to infrastructure maintenance and development. I have submitted a complaint to the municipality, and have communicated this to the offices of councillor Prinsloo, acknowledgement has been received but as yet nothing has been done.

GARY VAHL.
