New chapter begins for Umbilo Secondary’s principal

As he departs, Muller leaves behind a legacy that his successor would need to build on.

WHEN one thinks of Umbilo Secondary School, the name of Brian Muller automatically comes to mind. He has become synonymous with the school and the school synonymous with him. After almost 40 years in the profession, 25 of those years as principal of Umbilo Secondary School (USS), Muller will hang up his fedora, put down his Parker pen and move into doing ‘nothing’ as he so fondly told fellow principals at their Went Education Trust meetings.

“Muller is often referred to as the senior principal of the area by his fellow principals from neighbouring schools and his experience and advice will be missed by many, both at Umbilo and the other eight schools in the Austerville and Wentworth areas. He is a minefield of knowledge and skills and the epitome of a professional, treating all people with whom he comes into contact with dignity and respect. He’s a man who stands by his convictions and his word is his honour. Men of his calibre are few and far between these days,” said close friend and community member Clint Leverton.

As he departs, Muller leaves behind a legacy that his successor would need to build on. He has laid a solid foundation and an unshakable structure on which to build and really leaves behind big shoes to fill. Hundreds of thousands of learners have passed through his hands and in turn, have gone on to build amazing and remarkable careers of their own. His disciplined approach will leave an indelible mark on education long after his departure.

“After 38 years as an educator, 25 of which I have served as a principal, it is with a sense of uncertainty, excitement, and a modicum of pride that I will be retiring due to the mandatory retirement age of 65, on 20 September 2019. My greatest achievement would be turning USS into ‘the school of choice’ in the Wentworth area. I am leaving in a good space as l feel my passionate, dedicated and hard working staff have the strength and the will to succeed. I hand over the baton with a sense of fulfilment and contentment that my job is done. My successor must respect the community he serves. Developing a healthy working relationship with the various organisations is critical,” said Muller.

“Muller you have done well. Your achievements and gains during your tenure have been nothing less than spectacular. As you now head onto doing nothing, we wish you well and your well deserved break is overdue, what you have done for your community and as principal for your extended communities that your learners have come from is and always will be a sacrifice of love and dedication. Your presence and participation and your wise counsel will be missed by many. Rest well sir you have earned it and may God bless and keep you Sir for many many more years to come,” said Leverton.
