Wentworth’s bowling greens fill with competitors

On Wednesday, 21 August, the women’s nominated pairs final takes place at 9am.

Wentworth Bowling Club’s promotion and development programme is fulfilling the goal of Bowls SA’s 1sport4life initiative, as every week more new bowlers take to the greens to enjoy friendly competition.

Last week’s winners were co-ordinator, Margaret Walters and her stalwart supporter, Lorraine White. Interested persons are invited to Wentworth Bowling Club on Wednesday, 21 August, to register for a game. Registration opens at 2pm and play starts at 2.30pm.

Tomasina’s men’s casual bowls played on Friday morning, 16 August, proved profitable for Brian Smith, Colin Howes and Ben Venter who ended the day with a +13, a five shot advantage over second placed Tommy Cloete, Phil Hill and Albert van Niekerk. The week’s sportsmen’s prize went the way of Graham Bransby, Viv McCreanor and Rajen Pillay. Play starts at 9am every Friday for registered bowlers interested in a game.

The weekend saw the club’s greens fill with competitors as the secretaries attempt to complete the year’s quota of games. The men’s veterans competitor has reached the penultimate stage and the second semi-final between Neville Dolley and Brendon Davies will be contested on Saturday, 24 August at 1.30pm. The winner will face Brian Smith in the final on Sunday, 25 August, at 1.30pm, after the playing of the Grand Rapid Spur Big Jim pairs competition. On Wednesday, 21 August, the women’s nominated pairs final takes place at 9am. This will be contested between the combination of Maree Sadie and Jenny Greeff and who will take on Jay Retief, paired with Cheryl Waterman.

The final round of the women’s novice round robin competition will be played on Saturday afternoon, 24 August at 1.30pm. The club’s novices show improvement with every match they play and the club looks forward to them becoming formidable opponents on the greens in future.

Competitors in the Big Jim Pairs on Sunday, 25 August, are invited to join the regular supporters who enjoy the roast lunch provided by Fred’s Kitchen and the live music and dancing arranged for the afternoon. This week’s menu is roast pork with all the trimmings and a caramel milk tart for dessert.

On Friday, 30 August, the club hosts a bingo evening to raise funds for Troy Garland and the Port Natal U30 team’s trip to Gauteng to compete in the Bowls SA inter-district tournament. Prizes will be presented to winners of all the games.

The fun will start at 5.30pm and the usual bar facilities and food from the kitchen menu will be available. Contact Simon Garland on 082-895-0896 for details. Every so often a member steps up to the plate and shows their dedication to progress and improvement at the club. Nonagenarian and long standing member, Oom Dirk Venter has shown his mettle by providing a prize to be raffled every week for the past four weeks, thereby raising a substantial amount of much needed funds for the club.
