Storytelling competition nurtures young minds

The winners in their respective categories were: Afrikaans - Diya Bedessy from Isipingo Beach Intermediate School, English - Nandi Madlala from Gokul Primary School and isiZulu - Sibongile Mbambo of Gokul Primary School.

TWENTY learners from district six schools were hosted at Grosvenor library for this year’s installment of the Storytelling Competition on Tuesday, 13 August. Learners bravely took to the stage in front of judges, teachers, librarians and parents to tell stories in their language of choice, choosing either isiZulu, English or Afrikaans.

“We approached schools and did branch competitions to select the learners who participated in the district competition. Learners were tasked with selecting a book with the story they would tell, from their nearest library. Each story was not to be longer than eight minutes but also, not shorter than three minutes,” said Ayanda Mbhele, Havenside librarian.

Montlands, Lamontville, Havenside, Isipingo Civic, Isipingo Beach, Merebank, Grosvenor and Austerville libraries form part of district six. All eight libraries participated in the competition. In an effort to foster reading among primary school-going learners, eThewkini libraries created a culture of collaboration and outreach for formal and informal partnerships in communities for the attainment of common goals.

“With library competitions, libraries will develop relationships with educational organisations, community groups and agencies. These collaborative relationships will lead to support and ideas for new and existing programming to meet the needs of the community,” Ayanda added.
She added that libraries generally provide services for common good and have a strong focus on community development with no hidden agenda attached.
