Athletes identified and selected during this phase will be selected to represent their ward at the upcoming preliminary inter-ward games

KEEPING with its mandate to promote social cohesion and sports development in the city, eThekwini Municipality’s department of sport and recreation (DSR) will host the 2019 Ward Games and the talented sportsmen of ward 68 came out in their numbers for the initial U20 selection phase on Saturday, 20 July.

Wentworth soccer boys take each other on for a spot in the U20 soccer team for the 2019 ward games.

Local teams and members of the community were invited to try out for their spot in the different teams for various codes of sport including, netball, basketball, soccer and chess. Athletes identified and selected during this phase will be selected to represent their ward at the upcoming preliminary inter-ward games.

eThekwini Games were initiated in 2017 and aim to promote sports development in the city by identifying and nurturing talent. The games include all 110 wards participating in 16 sports codes. The games are the third biggest sporting event in the country after the South African Games and South African Local Government Authority (Salga) KZN DSR Games. The games kick off with ward tournaments. Winners from the wards will battle each other at district level, after which the 2019 champions will be crowned at the mega tournament scheduled to take place in December. The games are also an opportunity to scout for players to represent team eThekwini at the annual Salga Games.

Centre Yolanda Gasa takes a moment to figure out her next pass.

“As a ward we chose to focus on four codes of sport which we found to be relevant and of interest to our youth. This initiative was a call to all athletes and sportsman to come out and show us what they’ve got as well as an opportunity to engage in something worthwhile. Last year we had almost a dozen athletes make the eThekweni Municipality Sports Team and represented our ward at the Salga U20 Games. We are hoping to do even better this year with impressive talent coming out of our very own ward,” said Carl Webster, one of the coordinators of the U20 selection phase.
