Dirkie Uys spreads ‘Madiba magic’

Dirkie Uys principal, Nduduzo Mhlongo said that he and his staff wanted to show their learners the value of love and compassion.

THE learners of Dirkie Uys Primary School decided to spread the ‘Madiba magic’ by blessing the children and staff of St Monica’s Child and Youth Care Centre with a large load of groceries, toiletries and tasty treats on Mandela Day, Thursday, 18 July.

One of the school’s teachers Munadia Shaik, who headed the initiative, said that it was important for Dirkie Uys to give back to a worthy organisation within the community so that the learners would better relate to the impact of charity beginning at home. “We sent a request to parents and certain companies to collect the necessary items and were very pleased to receive well over 300 items to donate to St Monica’s. The drive behind this was not only to teach them about Mandela Day but also to instil love for others and our country at large because I personally feel like that lacks in our youth of today,” she said.

Dirkie Uys principal, Nduduzo Mhlongo said that in the context of Mandela Day, he and his staff wanted to show their learners the value of love and compassion. “We wanted to teach them about the legacy of Nelson Mandela and also wage a fight against poverty in the community,” he added.

St Monica’s director, Althea Govender said that she is grateful for the large donation as it would go a long way in feeding and taking care of the children at the home, which houses 84 children. “Thank you so much to everyone at Dirkie Uys who played a part in this initiative and putting smiles on our children’s’ faces by making this day special for them,” she said.

The home is a non-government Anglican institution that cares for orphaned, abused and vulnerable children who have been found to be in need of care by a court of law. Over and above the commendable work done at the home in caring and catering for the needs of all the children in their care, St Monica’s also strives to build a better society that would cause children less suffering and contribute to the well-being.

St Monica’s Child and Youth Care Centre is currently in need of 30cm foam mattresses, pillows, durable school bags, school socks and black stocking donations. To donate or for more information contact the home on 031-468-8656 r email althead@stmonicas.org.za.
