#MandelaDay: DSW and stakeholders clean-up Blamey Road

Sleeves were rolled up and refuse bags filled up with the rubbish collected.

A SAFER and cleaner environment for residents. This was the Durban Solid Waste’s vision on Mandela Day on Thursday morning, 18 July. A team from DSW mobilised an area clean-up with its stakeholders on Blamey Road, Montclair.
Members from PRASA, the Department of Parks and Recreation, ward 64 committee, South Durban Basin Area Based Management, volunteers, and co-ops rolled up their sleeves and filled refuse bags with the rubbish they had collected.
“We chose to do a clean-up on Blamey Road to curb crime in this area as it is next to a railway line. People easily steal from the houses nearby and hide in the bush. The area belongs to PRASA but today, because it’s Mandela Day, we’ve decided to put together our resources and call on our stakeholders and clean the place, to do our bit in fighting crime in the area,” said DSW Education Officer, Emelda Mkhulisi.
She added that the project will be sustained by PRASA to ensure that the bushes are always clear.
“We’re embracing the passion that our late leader, Nelson Mandela, had for the community. Moving forward, we will carry out similar projects as such within this ward, because we have set our sights on beyond just Mandela Day. We look forward to making a change in the community,” said ward 64 PR councillor, Nonkululeko Nxumalo.
