Report council property theft

"As a result the city will have to spend thousands and even hundreds of thousands of Rands to repair these assets," said Cllr JP Prinsloo.

THE destruction and theft of council owned assets around the Bluff have increased rapidly over several months. This is according to ward 66 councillor, JP Prinsloo, who said the first incident was with the theft of palisade fencing from Bluff Showgrounds to more recently, the destruction of stormwater drains by criminals to access the steel within the concrete.

“As a result the city will have to spend thousands and even hundreds of thousands of Rands to repair these assets. These types of activities have not only been affecting the Bluff but have seen other communities across eThekwini faced with the same criminal activity. The city has to drastically intervene in these criminal activities in order to safe guard municipal assets and prevent the cost of repairing these assets to fall on the shoulders of the city’s ratepayers,” he said.

JP added that he is working closely with city officials from Parks and Roads Maintenance Departments to repair all the damaged assets across the Bluff area.

“Metro police and the SAPS have also assisted in dealing with this criminal activity. But with the lack of resources faced by Metro police and the SAPS, Bluff residents will have to assist by keeping an eye out for any possible criminal activity that could take place or is taking place. It’s up to us to safeguard our community assets and keep our home safe,” he said.

Report criminal activities to Metro Police on 031 361 0000, the Brighton BeachSAPS on 031 451 8059 or report anonymously to CrimeStop on 086-001-0111.
