Soccer star puts Wentworth on the map

Ryan Adams' soccer career began on the grounds of Bayview Sports Club, where he played for the football club from the age of 11.

DESPITE many challenges, Wentworth is fast becoming one of the city’s most talented communities, having produced some world-class soccer stars, including local boy Ryan Adams, 21, who now plays for an Orlando Pirates team.

His blossoming soccer career began on the grounds of Bayview Sports Club, where he played for the football club from the age of 11. From then on it was love at first kick for young Ryan. It was only a few years later that he joined the U15 Golden Arrows development team before being promoted to the u17 development team where he played in two Engen Knockout tournaments achieving 7th and 3rd positions respectively.

The former Fairvale Secondary School learner also represented KZN at several U17 interprovincial tournaments. Ryan’s love for soccer has seen him compete in various soccer league tournaments and play against big local teams. During the past years, he has been selected to play for Summerfield Dynamos as well as the Shield Sbonis’iDiski trials where he scored a lifetime opportunity to travel to London. There he trained at the Chelsea FC facilities. “I was fortunate enough to be in the top 3 in SA to travel and experience London. Upon our return I was one of the top three players who received a one year contract with the Orlando Pirates Multichoice Diski Challenge (MDC) team,” he said.

As part of this Ryan looks now forward to improving his skills and following the footsteps of the senior team. His role models in the industry are Thiago Silva and Sergio Ramos, whom he reckons are the best central defenders in the world and leaders on and off the pitch.
