Dagga lab discovered in Brighton Beach area

A 51- year-old man who is a Bluff resident will be charged under the Firearms Control Act, as well as for dealing in dagga.

Team effort between the Metro Specialised Crime Prevention Unit, Durban and Brighton Beach Detective Services led to the discovery of an indoor hydroponic dagga lab situated within the Brighton Beach Policing area, on Friday, 17 May.

With a search and seize warrant in hand, the group pounced on the identified premises. “Their intelligence driven operation yielded the following results: Six unsecured unlicensed firearms, a large quantity of various calibre round ammunition, hydroponic cultivating apparatus and a large quantity of dagga in its vegetative state and matured state. Two parcels were prepared awaiting distribution to Cape Town and Gauteng. These parcels are estimated to have a street value of approximately R30 000,” said Brighton Beach Police spokesman Captain Louise Le Roux. The total value of the recovered dagga could not be verified at the time this article was published.

Le Roux said that a 51- year-old man who is a Bluff resident will be charged under the Firearms Control Act, as well as for dealing in dagga. He is expected to appear in court soon. “‘Firearms will be sent to ballistics for further analysis to be established if they were used in the commission of any offences,” she added.

Le Roux said that the success achieved through this collaboration showcases the importance of partnership policing initiatives with law enforcement agencies within the Brighton Beach Policing area. Brighton Beach management welcomes the arrest and several recoveries made by the Metro Specialised Crime Prevention, of Captain Gregory Beavon, and Brighton Beach Detective Services, lead by detective Captain Marius van der Looy.
