Grays Inn Road embankment to be upgraded

According to ward 66 councillor JP Prinsloo, the Coastal, Stormwater and Catchment Management Department (CSCM) will address these issues and work will be undertaken over the next three months to address this.

STORMWATER disposal and the instability of the steep embankment on Grays Inn Road on the Bluff where two stormwater mechanisms failed, were recently identified as negatively affecting the embankment.

Funding was made available during the severe storm inĀ 2017 to stabilise and address both failure mechanisms, however, the stormwater over-topped the kerbing and sidewalk and caused erosion in a number of places on the embankment.

According to ward 66 councillor JP Prinsloo, the Coastal, Stormwater and Catchment Management Department (CSCM) will address these issues and work will be undertaken over the next three months to address this. “The CSCM has been installing a pipe system in Grays Inn road with inlets at regular intervals to address the current stormwater management issues facing the road. New stormwater infrastructure will greatly reduce the possibility of the kerb over-topping and will reduce the large volumes of stormwater flowing down the road as it happens at present. There is also a possible instability of the embankment detected due to the road being excessively steep. Any works in this regard, including retaining structures, is the responsibility of the Roads Provision Department and has been referred to them. The road is currently being assessed every two years and any remedial work will be based on the outcome of that evaluation,” said Prinsloo.
