ROAD CLOSURE: Mia Avenue traffic island to ensure children’s safety

We are doing this to stop our children from being knocked down by cars and also for our peace.

A PLANNED traffic island is set to put a stop to the excessive thoroughfare and improve the safety of school children who use  Pascal Grove and Mia Avenue in Wentworth.

Situated between two primary schools, Mia Avenue has seen a number of children being knocked down by speeding motorists who use the small and narrow road.

Norman Abrahams said this has been a long time coming and he and the other residents have frequently petitioned for this road closure to happen.

Ward 68 councillor Aubrey Snyman met with road officials to discuss the traffic island, which will have bollards in place to block cars from entering. There will, however, be an open space to allow only prams, wheelchairs, and bikes to pass through.

“We are doing this to stop our children from being knocked down by cars and also for our peace. After school and during the holidays, this road is congested. With taxis and cars parked on the side, there is no room to move. We are reclaiming the safety of our children and our peace and quiet,” said Abrahams.

Construction of the traffic island is set to start on Monday, 19 November and it will hopefully be completed before the holidays begin. Councillor Aubrey Snyman asks for residents to be patient and understanding during the construction period, which should take four weeks, weather permitting.
