A world without words: Whistle nation

Have you used whistling to communicate with your friends?

Imagine a world without words but only the sounds of whistles, this is how the North Turkey village of Kuskoy communicates. It is a language of its own and over 5oo years old with 250 unique words.

It was recently recognised by The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) as an intangible heritage.

The whistled language or the bird language as they call it is used to communicate with each other through the fields and mountains of the village. The tradition is lived on through teaching the children the art of the unique language.

Some of us can’t whistle which is a shame because it’s such a cool trick. But watch the video below and start whistling away. We might not know all 250 words in the whistled language but at least learn 4 easy steps to sing like a bird.
