A ROBBERY victim finally had justice served after a Wentworth SAPS detective successfully secured a 12-year conviction on Tuesday, 2 October.
A man who was on his way to work in Wentworth’s Basil February Road at about 5.30am on Wednesday, 18 April, was assaulted by four men.
They robbed him of his cell phone and gold chain at knifepoint. Not long after he opened a case of robbery at Wentworth SAPS, a suspect known as ‘Bullet’ was arrested and detained at the police station.
The case docket was assigned to Detective Warrant Officer Walter Marais who, through his informer network, recovered the victim’s cell phone and positively identified the criminal.

“The suspect was charged for robbery with a weapon other than a firearm and refusing to divulge any other information,” said Wentworth SAPS spokesman, Capt Mbuso Gumede.
The matter went to trial in Durban court and the accused was found guilty on 2 October and sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment for robbery. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
“Detective W/O Marais’s hard work, dedication and experience in the investigation field helped him secure this conviction. The station management applauds the member for ensuring another criminal is kept away from our society,” said Capt Gumede.
