Pollution fight sees SDCEA win ‘surprise’ award

I was shocked when we received the award, it means the city is finally recognising what we do

THE team effort focused on fighting pollution at the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) won them the Association of Clean Communities Trust award on 26 June.
The award came as a shock for Desmond D’Sa who said he never thought they would win.

They were nominated by market traders who have seen them put in the hard yards during many clean-ups in the communities.

“I was shocked when we received the award, it means the city is finally recognising what we do in the communities. I always wanted to reach out to the city and it is sometimes difficult to get the heads of city departments to pay attention to us. With this award we want to say to the municipality is we want to work with you to make this city better and to ensure new solutions are found.

 
He hopes this will give them the opportunity to engage with the municipality further and through this engagement, work towards a brighter and cleaner future.
