THE daughter of a Yellowwood Park couple who were attacked in their home on Wednesday, 8 November has shared her fears for the elderly living in the area as she spoke about her parents’ assault.
The 81 and 79-year-old couple were attacked in their Robin Road home just after 10am, when three men entered through a hole in a wall which had been damaged during the 10 October storm that struck Durban.
Shirley le Guern expressed her anger not only towards the attackers but the insurance company which had dithered over fixing the storm-damaged fence.
“They were watching my father before they attacked.They watched his movements carefully and when he went to make a cup of tea, the three men snuck up on my father and hit him on the back of the head, knocking him out. My mother heard the commotion and called out to my father. The men went after her and tied both my parents up with rope,” said Shirley.
“They took jewellery, cash from the safe, a microwave and laptop and a firearm among other things,” said Montclair SAPS communication officer, Capt Dereck Vijiam.

My mother was covered in bruises from being manhandled by these criminals, my father ended up in ICU and was discharged on Friday. They are traumatised and the whole incident is a blur. What saddens me is there are many elderly people living in this area who are not protected. What is being done to ensure their safety?” she asked.
The couple was left vulnerable to crime after the wall was knocked down, but making their situation even more precarious was that their phone lines have not been working for the past three months. “They couldn’t call for help and they couldn’t even contact me. When I saw all the police and Blue Security vehicles, I could only think of the worst case scenario. My heart stopped at the thought. I’m incredibly grateful they are alive but I’m extremely angry at these criminals and the lack of service delivery to this community. They can’t go home now – they are too traumatised,” she said.
