Shark dissection shares ocean insights with Durban South scholars

A SHARK dissection provided interesting insights for primary school children to understand and learn about the importance of marine conservation and sea pollution on Friday, 4 November.
A Mondi-funded project run by Wildlife and Environmental Society of South Africa (Wessa) hosted a marine awareness day at Cuttings Beach for Settlers Primary School from Merebank, Ethukweni Primary and Msizi Dube Primary from Lamontville to teach them about marine life and the dangers of pollution.
“Although Marine Week was commemorated in October, we want to teach the children that we should help to protect the ocean and its creatures every day. This day is meant to bring awareness to marine life and address issues such as pollution in the water and land,” said WESSA senior education officer, Dudu Vilane-Ntombela.

Mondi CSI manager, Leonard Mbokazi said they support education in terms of environment conservation and encourage organisations such as WESSA to spread awareness about issues that threaten the planet. “If you look at the planet today you must think about what it will look like in 15 years’ time. This is why education is key and this is why Mondi supports education programmes, to give the youth knowledge and awareness about environmental issues,” said Mbokazi.
Guest speakers from Durban Solid Waste, the professional diving centre and Aqua Amazing’s Steven Mabugana were also invited to talk to the children. Mabugana, who was formerly with the Sharks Board, brought in a shark to dissect and showed the children different types of shark jaws, which was met with a mix of fear and awe.
