Brighton Beach SAPS urges second hand goods dealers to register businesses

Registration comes at no cost to the applicant

THE Secondhand Goods Act requires second-hand dealers to be registered in order to trade legally.

Brighton Beach SAP reminds second hand dealers that sections 3, 13 and 25 of the Act require the following types of businesses to register in order to trade legally:

  • Antique dealers;
  • auctioneers;
  • charity organisations;
  • communication equipment dealer;
  • electronic equipment dealer;
  • general dealer;
  • household goods repair dealer;
  • motor vehicle dealer,
  • tyre dealers and car parts / accessories dealers;
  • car repairers;
  • panel beaters;
  • pawnbrokers;
  • recyclers;
  • scrap metal dealers and
  • second-hand book dealers.

Registration comes at no cost to the applicant, and application forms (SAPS 601) and guideline information on the documents to attach with applications, are available on the SAPS website at ww.saps.org.za

Even where a business owner believes their business does not fall within the ambit of the Act, they are advised to first confirm this with the station’s designated second-hand goods official (DSHGO) to avoid any misunderstandings or possible future prosecution.

Bringhton Beach SAPS’s DSHGO is Warrant Officer Anton W van der Merwe, who can be reached at the station’s room 13 on the ground floor. Call him on 031-451-8031 or email vandermerweA4@saps.gov.za

For consultations purposes, second hand goods applicants are advised to visit Brighton Beach police station before 8am on weekday mornings.
