Explore Pinetown national monument on weekend walk

There are also mysterious burial mounds (stone) scattered around the reserve.

DURBAN Ramblers Hiking Club will investigate one of Pinetown’s two national monuments when it hikes in Paradise Valley Nature Reserve on Saturday, 15 July.

Call hike leader Linda on 083-353-8319.

This is a good beginner’s hike, taking place in mostly shaded, wooded areas with a few gentle hills. One of the two national monuments in Pinetown is to be found in the reserve – the Umbilo Water Works (1887 to 1905). There are also mysterious burial mounds of stone scattered around the reserve. Hiker should park in Oxford Road and meet at 1.45pm inside the reserve (10 Oxford Road). There is a R20 entrance fee. This hike of about 6km is graded one, easy to moderate.

On Sunday, 16 July hikers will take a walk from Mitchell Park to Durban’s Point. Call hike leader Jenny Rooks on 084-952-0622.

Hikers should take along money for coffee and refreshments along the way for this 20km walk from Mitchell Park to the Point and back. Meet at 7.30am at Mitchell Park’s Nimmo Road parking area. This hike is graded three, due to the distance.
