Monster movies are coming…

Which monster movie do you hope will be brought in to the franchise?

CINEMATIC universes are all the rage these days and another studio has jumped on the bandwagon.

Like Marvel and DC with their superhero universes with popular heroes intertwining across multiple movies, fans of films are clamouring for more collaborative film experiences.

Universal Studios has joined the game and you might have already seen the first film in their line-up – The Mummy, which was released a few weeks ago. This is the inaugural movie in the studios’ Dark Universe.

Monster movies gained popularity in the early 20th century and have gone through cyclical phases. Every few decades  a slew of monster movies will head to the big screen and then they die down again for a while to make way for the next craze.

While not much information is available yet on how the films will be linked and how many popular monsters will be brought in, those who have seen The Mummy will note the appearance of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, played by Russell Crowe, as the head of an organisation called Prodigium, which seems to be the first connection to future films.

Next in the line-up is the Bride of Frankenstein, expected to be released in February 2019. Four other movies have been listed as part of the universe so far, including The Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Invisible Man, The Wolfman and Van Helsing. There are rumours that the series will also include Dracula, Frakenstein, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Phantom of the Opera.
