Depression and anxiety group helps create hope

For more than two decades, SADAG has been providing support to sufferers of depression, anxiety, bipolar, trauma and other mental illnesses.

THERE is hope for those living with depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder and their friends and family through the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) group on the Bluff.

The group meets at Durban Academy High School every alternate Wednesday from 5.30pm to 7pm. The the next meeting will be this Wednesday, 17 May and there is no entrance fee.

“Having a degree in psychology and having been a high school teacher at Durban Academy for 10 years, I have become increasingly aware of the impact of depression and teen suicide in the South Durban area,” said support group leader, Baron Tanner.

“Support groups are especially helpful in communities with little to no resources for mental health services. However, they can also be beneficial even in the private sector, where the cost of healthcare is extremely high and meetings with a psychiatrist or psychologist are limited. Support groups do not replace treatment, but provide an important platform for connecting and sharing experiences with people in similar situations,” read a statement from SADAG.

For more than two decades, SADAG has been providing support to sufferers of depression, anxiety, bipolar, trauma and other mental illnesses and has seen more than 200 groups set up nationwide.

“These benefits can be extended to their friends and family members by providing them with helpful tips on how to assist their loved ones and how to recognise the signs and symptoms of the various illnesses.”

For information call Baron on 061-313-4874 or for details on support groups in other areas call 0800-212-223 or SMS 31393.
