Wentworth dance troupe stages ‘Colourful’ at the playhouse

Colourful is not to be missed - only two shows will be staged at 2pm and 7pm at the Playhouse on Saturday, 22 April.

DURBAN is in for a treat as the dance production Colourful prepares for its showcase at the playhouse on 22 April 2017 at the Playhouse Drama Theatre.

Under the non-profit organisation Wentworth Arts and Culture organisation’s professional development programme and supported by the National Arts Council, this is the first professional showcase choreographed and directed by Jarryd Watson.

Colourful brings a vibrant and diverse cast of seven dancers and one poet in an unique artistic style which narrates a story about the transition from apartheid to our democracy with the fusion of contemporary dance, hip hop dance and poetry.

“Audiences are taken through a journey of nostalgia with the quality of movement, classical and hip hop music and props that depicts the social ills and struggles of all South Africans during the apartheid era and in today’s democracy,” said Watson.

“The one thing that I love about the arts is that it is so dynamic in portraying different emotions but also creates a platform for social justice, enlightenment and knowledge about the social issues.

“Colourful” indulges in all these aspects that the audience will identify with and be entertained”, he added.

Talisa Cornwall from Richards Bay moved to the Bluff to pursue her career in dance and forms part of the Colourful ensemble. She trained in different styles of dance with Dance Incorporated in Richards Bay and now joins Dance Movement professional development programme.

“Im so honoured to be part of the Dance Movement team and I have grown as dancer and artists. Colourful has motivated me to explore emotions I never knew I possessed and working with Jarryd and the  choreography he teaches is edgy and will be thought provoking for audiences” said Talisa.

Celebrating 10 years of the Dance Movement project  Jarryd Watson has done exceptional work in dance for the youth in the community, creating access for training and development of performance skills and international exposure and now continues to be committed in growing artists and creating opportunity for young professionals.
