Ronnie van Rooyen rugby win boosts rusty Quins

Quins hopes they enjoyed the day too and wishes them all well for the upcoming season.

THE 2017 Ronnie van Rooyen Memorial Day was nothing short of what can only be described as a sensational day.

Each and every spectator who attended from early morning contributed to a festive atmosphere and they were entertained with exhilarating rugby in very hot conditions.

It was a day for everyone with rides for the youngsters, Sharkie providing entertainment and great fun provided by the RocoMamas kicking competition.

Special thanks to Harlequins chairman Wesley Slabbert and his committee under guidance from Alan Walker and Dale Caswell. Oom Ronnie would be proud of what was achieved. Together, everyone put in the hard work to make the day a huge success. It was an immense effort by all, from the ball boys to the bar staff, and it resulted in an event that proved once again that the Bluff community and Harlequins Rugby Club can host big events.

Although scores were never the main focus point, it was however a good time for clubs to sound early warnings of intent, with the league fixtures about to kick off towards the end of the month. The day was again well supported by College Rovers, Durban Collegians, Crusaders, Varsity College, Jaguars, UKZN Pmb, Queensburgh, Hillcrest, Kwantu Spears and the visiting Centurion side. Quins hopes they enjoyed the day too and wishes them all well for the upcoming season.

The Harlequins boys were in action too and the first team tasted victory against the visiting UKZN Pietermaritzburg team. Although rusty, the Quins boys will be pleased with their first proper outing and the rustiness will be ironed out in the upcoming weeks. Eben Botha opened the scoring for the Mighty Quins with a brilliant solo effort. The students were full of enterprise as always and hit back with a try of their own, but it was a beautiful finish by Tinevimbo Gurure that later put the game beyond reach. A victory of 20-7 was a real confidence booster against the premier league team. Coach Devan Dippenaar was very pleased with his charges. It was also a fitting tribute to the late Danie Flemming.

The second team squad had an outing against Queensburgh and it was great to give everyone a run. Some say it was disruptive playing with such a big squad, but it was important for coach Charl Bezuidenhout to see all the players at his disposal. The team has a proven record over the last few seasons and the club looks forward to seeing them in action this season.

Lastly thank you to all the past Quins players who attended. It was great to have them there and the club looks forward to seeing more of them at home games.

This week the Mighty Quins will play their first game in the Flya Tournament, with the draw taking place later in the week.
